Prior to the 2027 general elections, social activist Aisha Yesufu has called on opposition leaders Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to implement realistic campaign tactics that tackle the economic realities that many Nigerians face.

Yesufu offered the counsel in a post on her 𝕏 (previously Twitter) account on Thursday. She emphasized that many residents have been compelled to put survival above political rhetoric due to the country’s rising economic distress.

The activist claims that pervasive poverty has had a substantial impact on how people react to political ideas, making urgent relief and tangible support more significant to many voters.

She maintained that many Nigerians are finding it difficult to satisfy their basic necessities as a result of the current economic climate, especially with rising food prices.

Yesufu claimed that policies that, in her opinion, had deprived citizens of their financial potential had made the issue worse.

“People were purposefully left in poverty, with money taken from their pockets and food made expensive so that small tokens would matter to them,” she wrote.

The activist also urged opposition parties to modify their campaign messaging so that it speaks to Nigerians’ daily struggles.

She asserts that political actors who want to win over voters must be aware of the pressing issues that residents face.

“The opposition needs to run their campaign in a language that the public can comprehend as we approach the 2027 election,” she continued.

Yesufu proposed that in order to properly engage voters, political campaigns should incorporate both policy rhetoric and practical support.

“Give bread with your photo on it to people in need. Give policy paperwork with your photo on them to people who require policies, she advised.

Yesufu also emphasized the psychological and social effects of hunger on residents, pointing out that people who are having trouble meeting their fundamental requirements could find it hard to concentrate on political or policy discussions.

“A hungry person is incapable of reasoning. She wrote, “He or she just wants the rumbling in their stomach to stop.”
