A staff member of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, Frank Omorojie, has been commended for returning a lost purse with cash and crucial travel documents to its owner at the departure hall of Terminal 2.
The item was found by Omorojie on Wednesday at the Rwanda Air check-in area.
Inside the purse was $1,700, a Nigerian and British passport, and a credit card.
An airport source said the find immediately raised concern about tracing the owner, but Omorojie handed over the item to Aviation Security, AVSEC, personnel without hesitation.
Standard airport procedures were followed in recording the recovered items and they were handed over to the Customer Service unit, which immediately made a public announcement in an attempt to locate the owner.
In a short time a Nigerian passenger who was to fly to Kigali, Rwanda and who feared the items were lost forever was reunited with all her belongings intact.
The incident was a clear example of professionalism and integrity, airport officials said, and such actions reinforced the public’s confidence in airport operations and the conduct of airport workers.
Speaking briefly, Omorojie said he was guided by simple principles of honesty in his decision.
“I just did what was right,” he replied.
Colleagues and airport authorities have since hailed his action describing it as a commendable example of responsibility and ethical conduct in public service.
