A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayekooto Akindele, has accused the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of being used by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a political platform to truncate the southern presidency.

Akindele made the claim while reacting to comments credited to the Obidient Movement, which reportedly described former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as wise for leaving the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), it was reported.

The APC chieftain, in a post on his Facebook page, faulted the position, maintaining that Obi ought to have known from the outset that the ADC was allegedly set up to advance Atiku’s political ambition.

Akindele said Obi’s decision to join the ADC first and later moved to another platform was not politically wise.

He said the former governor of Anambra State would have done well to have stayed away from the ADC in the first place.

“ObiDENTs say Obi is a wise politician by not contesting in the ADC Primary but running away from the party,” he wrote. I do not agree with them.

“The greatest ignorance of any politician is not to know from the onset that ADC was Atiku’s vehicle to truncate the Southern presidential term.

Akindele alleged that the ADC arrangement was a part of a wider scheme to restore power to the North after the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu.

The APC chieftain also claimed that Atiku had earlier attempted to use the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to achieve the same objective but failed.

He said, “It was a deal to give back power to the North after 8 years of Buhari and 4 years of Tinubu. He used PDP before and failed.”

Akindele’s remarks come as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures and political groups exploring new alliances.

Atiku was the presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2019 and 2023 elections and has remained a major player in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Akindele also dismissed the claim by some members of the Obidient Movement that Obi made the right move in avoiding the ADC presidential primary.

He said Obi’s transition from the Labour Party to the ADC and then to the NDC demonstrated bad political judgment.

He said Abia State Governor Alex Otti showed better political sense by not going in the same direction.

He added, “So, Obi would have been better off not joining ADC at all. The most stupid thing he did was to run away from LP and he ended up in NDC. This clearly shows that Alex Otti is a sensible man and Pita is a foolish man to the core.””
