Akpabio Asks Tinubu to Back Re-election of National Assembly Leaders Ahead of 2027

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged President Bola Tinubu to support the return of National Assembly leaders and lawmakers seeking re-election in 2027, citing the legislature’s backing for the President.

Akpabio made the appeal while speaking at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where he expressed confidence in the relationship between Tinubu and members of the National Assembly.

He asked the President to encourage lawmakers to seek another term, stressing that their continued support would strengthen his administration.
“If the National Assembly is so much with you, why don’t you encourage them to come back and support you in the second term?” Akpabio asked.

The Senate President also assured Tinubu of the legislature’s continued support, declaring that the National Assembly would not be used to undermine the President.

“Nobody can break through the National Assembly to dislodge you. We are solidly behind you,” he said.
Akpabio further disclosed his intention to bring lawmakers from across party lines to a future gathering, including members of the opposition, subject to Tinubu’s approval.

He said senators were eager to join him and asked the President for permission to invite the Senate minority leader and other opposition lawmakers.
The Senate President also cautioned state governors against neglecting their constituents in pursuit of other political offices before completing their tenure.

Addressing the governors, Akpabio drew on his experience as a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, where he served for two terms.

“And for my brothers who are governors, I want you to know that you must not abandon your people. I did eight years as a governor, and the constitution says you should do eight years. There’s no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available,” he said.

Although Akpabio did not mention any governor by name, his remarks came after Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma announced at the same event that he intended to contest for a Senate seat.

“I will be on the ballot as a senatorial candidate,” Uzodimma had declared while addressing the gathering.

Akpabio also highlighted his political experience, saying his electoral success was linked to maintaining a strong relationship with the people.

“Take it from me. I’ve been in this business for over 25 years, and I always win. And why I always win is because I stand with people,” he said.
