The daughters of former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn have spoken of their devastating loss after their father was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for murdering their mother.
Flynn, 40, was convicted last week of killing his wife, Ashley, after jurors rejected his claim that an intruder entered their Ohio home and shot her as she slept.
The former music pastor was found guilty of aggravated murder and eight additional charges, including tampering with evidence.
Ashley Flynn, a 37-year-old teacher, was killed in February. Her two daughters, aged nine and 11, were asleep in the house at the time.
Flynn told investigators that he had been asleep when he heard gunshots. He said he then discovered Ashley dead in bed and found the garage door open.
Prosecutors alleged that Flynn staged the home to make the killing appear to have been carried out by an intruder.
During the trial, investigators presented police body-camera footage and digital records from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch. The prosecution argued that the evidence undermined his account.

The prosecution also called dozens of witnesses, including Botner, whom Flynn had met while she was an intern at his church.
Botner read some of the roughly 100,000 messages exchanged with Flynn. Among them was a message in which he allegedly described thinking about ways to kill Ashley while avoiding prison.
Another message allegedly stated that he wanted her “dead and gone.”
Flynn did not testify, and his defence team called no witnesses.
At the sentencing hearing, his daughters’ letters were read aloud.
One daughter wrote, “Dear Daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing?”
She said Ashley was “the perfect person” and expressed pain over the loss of her mother.
The second daughter began her letter with “Dear Caleb”, rather than “Dad”. She urged him to tell everyone what he had done and accept his punishment.
“You made me feel like an idiot thinking I could trust you,” she wrote.
She also told Flynn that she would never visit him in prison, although she said her faith in God remained.
Flynn cried as the letters were read.
In his statement to the court, he said he loved his family and apologised for decisions he had made. He acknowledged that he had failed his wedding vows but continued to deny murdering Ashley.
“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed those vows,” he said.
Judge Jeannine Pratt described Flynn as an “extreme” danger to the public before imposing the life sentence.
His lawyer, Patrick Mulligan, said he planned to appeal, arguing that prosecutors had failed to establish prior calculation and design.
Mulligan also questioned the murder case, saying evidence of infidelity did not prove Flynn was responsible and challenging the tampering allegation because the firearm could not be located.
Following the verdict, Ashley’s family described her as a devoted Christian and loving mother.
“Ashley loved Jesus with her whole heart,” the family statement said. “She loved people. Most of all, she loved being a mum.”
Flynn had appeared briefly on American Idol in 2013, when he said he loved his wife “more than anything.”
