Academic activities at the Plateau State University, Bokkos have been suspended following an indefinite strike by the university chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
This decision was taken after the union’s Congress met on Tuesday August 25, 2026 after the university management failed to satisfactorily resolve issues raised by the lecturers.
In a statement signed and made public on Thursday by the ASUU-PLASU Chairperson, Vincent Choji and Secretary, Lomka Iliya, the union said it had earlier given the management a 14-day ultimatum to resolve its concerns.
The lecturers’ August 11 deadline expired without the issues being satisfactorily resolved, in their view.
The university administration replied to the ultimatum in a letter dated August 18, the union said.
But ASUU said the response did not sufficiently address the issues in its demands.
The lecturers said attempts to resolve the matter failed leaving them with no option but to embark on industrial action
The union said the strike had been approved by the National Executive Council of ASUU.
One of the issues raised by the lecturers is the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for members of staff.

They are equally asking for the full implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU as well as the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.
The union also raises another major concern, the condition of staff accommodation.
The ASUU is demanding the provision of safe and secure staff quarters for its members and the building of trenches around the perimeter fence of the university to enhance security.
The lecturers also accused the management of intimidating the leaders of the union and called for a stop to what they described as such acts.
In addition, the union wants the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award.
After the congress decision, ASUU-PLASU ordered all its members to pull out of academic activities with immediate effect.
The union said the directive will stay in place until further notice. The lecturers called on members, students and other stakeholders to appreciate the basis of the action, emphasizing that the strike became inevitable after the outstanding issues remained unresolved.
