More attention has been given to the translation of professional intelligence knowledge and operational exposure to practical solutions to emerging security threats by the Nigerian Army.
The General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, has urged defense intelligence officers to deploy the lessons acquired from the national study tour to Nigeria’s changing security environment.
Major General Mahmuda delivered the charge at Headquarters 2 Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, during a welcome reception for participants of the Advanced Defense Intelligence Officers Course 16/2026, led by the Commandant of the Defense Intelligence College, Commodore Usman Mainasara Bugaje.
“The GOC reiterated the importance of such engagements as opportunities to share knowledge and learn more about the contemporary security challenges,” said Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah in a statement.
The security challenges confronting the Division’s Area of Responsibility, as highlighted by Major General Mahmuda, included kidnapping and other criminal activities, with particular reference to the situation around the Old Oyo National Park.
He said the visit was timely and the interaction provided helpful insights into the operating environment and an opportunity for the intelligence officers to better understand the nature of threats confronting communities within the Division’s area of responsibility.
The GOC therefore called on the participants to optimally use the knowledge and experience gained from their study tour to develop workable solutions to the security challenges facing the country.
He also commended the Commandant and his team for the visit and the level of interaction, stressing that professional exchanges are a vital means of strengthening institutional understanding and boosting collective capacity to tackle security threats.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the intelligence officers to experience the operational realities of 2 Division first hand, adding field level insights on the security environment and military response to emerging threats to their formal professional training.
Earlier, Commodore Bugaje had explained that the Defense Intelligence College had been in existence for over 25 years and that the national study tour was part of the mandatory requirements for successful completion of the course.
The Commandant also emphasized the need for integrated intelligence in the attainment of peace and security, while commending the GOC and commanders of 2 Division for their support toward the successful conduct of the study tour.
The program also featured an operational briefing by the Commanding Officer, Administrative Battalion, 2 Division Garrison, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Simon, who gave a brief over view of the security situation in Oyo State and the operational activities being conducted by the Division.
This was followed by an interactive session where participants discussed issues emanating from the operational assessment and requested further clarification on aspects of the security environment.
In the end, the engagement helped to reinforce the link between professional intelligence education and operational problem solving, providing an opportunity for participants through the study tour to connect classroom knowledge with the realities of contemporary security operations.
