The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has completed the construction of modern divisional police headquarters and residential quarters in Ushafa and Saburi in the Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Councils, respectively.
The Director, Security Services Department, FCTA, Mr Adamu Gwary, disclosed this to journalists during an inspection of the projects on Wednesday.
Gwary said the Ushafa and Saburi projects had reached 100 per cent completion and were ready for official handover.
He stated that 10 other divisional police headquarters across the FCT had achieved more than 90 per cent completion.
According to him, the facilities are part of the construction of 12 divisional police headquarters, two in each of the six area councils, aimed at improving security coverage and reducing security gaps in satellite communities.
“Out of the 10 ongoing projects, almost all have achieved more than 90 per cent completion, following the FCT Minister’s directive for all contractors to complete the projects before the end of November,” he said.
Gwary said the projects were part of efforts to strengthen security infrastructure in fringe and rural communities across the territory.
He explained that the Ushafa and Saburi facilities included police headquarters with administrative offices, a central counter and detention facilities, with separate cells for male and female suspects.
He added that each facility also had residential accommodation for police officers to support personnel deployment and rapid response to security incidents.
Gwary said the residential block comprised six fully furnished two-bedroom en-suite flats, with dining areas, kitchens, stores and sitting rooms.
He said that a technical team from the Public Building Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) would work with the contractor to verify the specifications against the Bill of Quantities before the official handover.
The director recalled that during the security challenges experienced in 2023, the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, held town hall meetings across the six area councils and promised to decentralise security infrastructure to communities outside the city centre.
He said the Ushafa police station and another facility at Igbu, about 35 kilometres from the FCT-Nasarawa border, would improve security coverage in satellite communities and strengthen the territory’s borders against cross-border crime and kidnapping.
Gwary said the FCTA had recorded a reduction in reported cases of kidnapping and other serious crimes across the FCT, attributing the development to improved equipment, expanded security infrastructure and enforcement measures.
He also warned residents against providing information or assistance to kidnappers and other criminals.
“The minister did not mince his words in issuing a stern warning to those informants that they will be treated like kidnappers,” Gwary said.
He urged residents to provide timely and accurate information to security agencies whenever they noticed suspicious activities.
Gwary said the FCTA was also expanding logistics support to security agencies and deploying technology to strengthen surveillance across the territory.
He disclosed that the Airport-to-Villa corridor was being monitored through technology managed from the Force Headquarters control room.
He added that the surveillance network would be expanded to other high-risk corridors beyond presidential routes.
“Aerial surveillance assets are being finalised for deployment to track criminal elements in rugged terrains,” he said.
The Site Engineer for the Ushafa project, Mr Kabir Muhammed, said the contractor worked closely with project monitoring and evaluation teams to deliver the facility within schedule.
