Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has accused some members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, of planning to sabotage the August 15, 2026 governorship election in the state.

The governor in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday, said some players in the opposition party were resorting to anti-democratic means because of fear of losing the forthcoming poll.

It said the alleged plot was motivated by internal assessments within the opposition that allegedly indicated declining public support for the party ahead of the election.

“Having seen clearly that the Osun people have rejected them, they are now resorting to anti-democratic means in a last ditch effort to secure power,” the statement read.

The governor’s camp said opinion surveys allegedly commissioned between late 2025 and March 2026 put the APC’s popularity below 30 per cent while Adeleke’s approval rating ranged between 68 and 72 per cent.

“This is a clear indication that the people are overwhelmingly behind Governor Adeleke. “The opposition can already see the result before August 15,” he said.

The governor also claimed that the recent statement made by Akin Ogunbiyi on President Bola Tinubu’s position has unsettled some factions within the Osun APC.

He alleged that the situation aggravated tensions among party members particularly those in factions loyal to former governor Adegboyega Oyetola who he said resorted to desperate political maneuvers.

The statement also charged that the opposition was trying to destabilise other political platforms and was pushing for their deregistration after failing to gain control.

In reaction, the Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and said they were a sign of anxiety in the governor’s camp.

“It’s simple arithmetic,” said Olabisi. They’ve all gone, those eminent politicians in their camp. See Wole Oke, Fadahunsi, Ajilesoro, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi and many others.

“So what is left of their party? Their party is unpopular. It also lacks a spine. “The people of Osun should reject Adeleke because he does not know what he is talking about.”
