The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has rubbished speculations that former president Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election.
According to Wike, no politician can claim that he is in a race unless he shows interest.
The minister disclosed this on Monday during his monthly media chat in Abuja.
“Public pressure or persuasion is not being applied on any politician to contest elections. Aspirants normally express interest before support is given,” Wike argued.
He said stories of politicians being “drafted” by the public to run for office are often misleading.
Wike said that normally people contesting elections would have shown interest, either directly or indirectly, before supporters start rallying around them.
He said: “You don’t go and get someone to run. Somebody will say, “I’d rather go run and come and talk to you.”
“Nobody sits there and says, I mean…, nobody comes to you.
“When you hear sometimes politicians say people want me to come out, nobody wants anybody to come out. Inside no one is sleeping and people will say come and run for an election. Either you have shown signal that you are interested.
Did Jonathan ever show any interest? Respect him. He’s a former President. “Nobody can read a candidate’s body language.”
