NANS hails appointment of Dangut as WAEC Registrar

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Secretariat, has congratulated Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut on his appointment as the 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, the student body described the appointment as a recognition of Dangut’s distinguished service and commitment to credible examination administration.

“The NANS National Secretariat received with great delight the news of the appointment of Dr. Dangut, a distinguished Nigerian education administrator, scholar, examination expert and accomplished technocrat, to lead the Council at this important juncture in the evolution of educational assessment across the West African sub-region.

“This elevation represents a significant recognition of your years of distinguished service, professional competence and unwavering commitment to the advancement of credible examination administration and educational development across Nigeria and the West African sub-region,” the statement reads in part.

Dangut, a Nigerian education administrator and examination expert, joined WAEC in 1998 after starting his career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994.

He served in various capacities including test development, examination security, branch management and zonal coordination, before serving as Head of the Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026.

NANS noted that during his tenure as HNO, Dangut championed modernization of examination administration, including the Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of question papers, Digital Electronic Marking System, Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive.

“These initiatives reflect a leadership disposition that embraces innovation while preserving the core values of credibility, integrity, transparency and excellence upon which WAEC has built its reputation,” the statement said.

Beyond WAEC, Dangut has served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Grange Educational Foundation, and represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

NANS charged the new Registrar to deepen innovation, strengthen examination credibility and ensure that the interests of millions of students across the sub-region remain central to WAEC’s operations.

It said, “As you assume the mantle of Registrar and CEO of WAEC, NANS charges you to carry this responsibility with distinction and to continually uphold the integrity of the Council. We particularly urge you to use this new platform to deepen innovation, strengthen examination credibility, promote fairness and ensure that the interests and aspirations of millions of students across the sub-region remain central to WAEC’s operations.

“For the Nigerian students community, his emergence at the helm of WAEC represents an important moment for the continuous conversation around examination integrity, accessibility, technological innovation, efficient assessment systems, credible certification and the future of education in West Africa.

“At this defining moment, we are confident that your experience, institutional knowledge and proven commitment to excellence will further strengthen WAEC and enhance Nigeria’s standing within the West African education community.

“We urge the new Registrar/CEO to continue to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, credibility and innovation in the administration of examinations, while strengthening WAEC’s role in shaping an assessment system that responds effectively to the changing realities of students and educational institutions across the sub-region.”
