NEMA activates early response plan, deepens DSS partnership

The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Zubaida Umar has reiterated the agency’s commitment towards proactive disaster management with emphasis on enhancing collaboration with key stakeholders across the country.

This disclosure was made during a working visit to the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja, where she received a delegation of the Simulation and Crisis Management Directorate of the Department of State Services.

She said the agency is increasing efforts to promote risk mitigation and build community resilience with early warning systems, preparedness measures and coordinated response strategies.

“We are committed to taking a proactive, risk-informed approach to disaster management, focusing on early warning dissemination, preparedness, mitigation and coordinated response to emerging threats,” she said.

The NEMA boss said, “Following the issuance of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, the agency took steps to mitigate the impact of expected flooding during the rainy season.

She said NEMA has increased engagement with stakeholders, established technical coordination platforms and initiated sensitisation campaigns targeted at state governments and vulnerable communities.

Umar also assured the visiting delegation that the agency was ready to strengthen collaboration in areas of disaster preparedness, simulation planning and emergency response.

“We are ready to continue working closely to improve coordinated emergency response across the country,” she added.

The visit, according to Acting Assistant Director General of the Directorate Safiya Yusuf, was aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation and improving national crisis response mechanisms.

The Directorate is involved in providing support before, during and after emergencies,” she said, adding that it is committed to working with NEMA to improve preparedness across the country.
