Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has criticized the Nigeria Democratic Congress’s (NDC) choice to place its 2027 presidential ticket in the South.
According to reports, Keyamo characterized the action as a political ploy to deceive Nigerians prior to the upcoming election.
In an interview with Vanguard on Sunday, the minister claimed that people could not trust the agreement because it lacked seriousness.
He claimed that the ruling created numerous concerns about whether the party would actually adhere to the agreement in the event that political objectives later shifted.
Keyamo contended that the same leaders who approved the party’s stance might simply change it. If conditions changed in the future, he continued, there was nothing preventing the party from taking a different course.
The minister also mentioned the potential for former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, to switch political parties or persuade the coalition to undo the zoning agreement if he ever rose to prominence within the group.
Such possibilities, in Keyamo’s opinion, demonstrate that the resolution cannot be a trustworthy pledge to Nigerians prior to the general election in 2027. Such party agreements, he insisted, are not final and can be altered whenever political leaders so choose.
“The NDC’s decision is nothing more than political 419 and an insult to Nigerians’ sensibilities.” In the unusual event that Peter Obi wins, what would happen if he switched parties or, in his capacity as leader of the NDC, persuaded the party’s NEC to overturn the ruling? The minister declared, “This is just a joke taken too far.”
