The Rivers State Police Command has arrested and detained officers allegedly caught in a viral video circulating on social media extorting motorists.
The incident which occurred in Rivers State was brought to the public’s notice on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, as it involved officers attached to the Old GRA Police Station. The officers were accused of targeting drivers, particularly those with tinted windows, and demanding money despite the fact that they had valid permits.
The command has confirmed the arrest and investigation of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers mentioned in the allegations, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, on behalf of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju.
The statement said CP Adepoju ordered the arrest, detention and immediate investigation of the officers on allegations of extortion.
“Under no circumstances will any form of unprofessional conduct, illegal collection of money or extortion by police personnel be tolerated,” he said.
The Commissioner also assured residents that the investigation would be “thorough, transparent and impartial”, warning that any officer found guilty will be subjected to disciplinary action in accordance with the law and the Nigeria Police Act.
The police command has also urged members of the public to continue to report cases of misconduct, corruption and abuse of office through official complaint channels, assuring them of its commitment to professionalism, integrity and accountability.
