‘One painful night shouldn’t erase 20 years’ – AY speaks on Cardiff show fallout, apologises to fans

Comedian AY Makun has apologised to fans affected by the controversy surrounding his Cardiff comedy show, saying he understands their disappointment and intends to make amends with a free performance.

AY, in a lengthy message posted on Instagram, responded to the criticism that followed the incident, including calls for the public to cancel him.

The comedian said it was painful to see one difficult night used to question more than two decades of work in the entertainment industry. He also expressed frustration that negative stories about him appeared to generate more excitement than reports of his achievements and consistency.

He explained that some respected colleagues advised him to keep quiet and allow the controversy to pass. However, he felt those who had paid to attend the show deserved to hear his explanation.

AY said he had experienced repeated difficulties during the tour involving payment commitments that were not fulfilled. He added that he had sometimes paid colleagues from his own pocket.

He said the long drive from Sheffield to Cardiff, which took about five hours, followed by another frustrating experience, pushed him to his limit.

Nevertheless, the comedian acknowledged that the audience had done nothing wrong and deserved an apology.

“For your disappointment, wasted time and the upset you experienced, I am sincerely sorry,” he said.

AY urged people to watch his video and listen to his account, while recognising that some might still disagree with his decision. He maintained that his explanation should also be considered.

He further stated that calls for his cancellation would not make him abandon everything he had built throughout his career. Instead, he promised to learn from the experience and continue working.

The comedian also said people were free to choose whether to support his shows, but asked that the decisions of those who continued supporting the AY brand be respected.

In an effort to address the situation, AY announced plans to stage a free show in Cardiff at his own expense, subject to confirmation of the venue and other arrangements.

He clarified that the proposed show would not replace any refunds due to attendees of the original event.

AY concluded by thanking supporters and critics who approached him respectfully, saying he remained committed to sharing laughter with audiences.
