The Osun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party-backed Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has spoken out against a recent protest by council chairmen who were elected under the All Progressives Congress.
The PDP-backed ALGON leadership said on Thursday that the APC chairmen’s claims that the state judiciary had broken court orders in cases involving local government administration were false.
On Wednesday, the APC council chairmen held a protest at the entrance to the Osun State High Court in Osogbo. They were upset about the trial of officials from a commercial bank that was connected to local government allocations.
The protesters held up signs that said things like “Say no to disobedience of court orders” and “Disrespect for court judgments is an invitation to anarchy.”
Kolapo Olayanju, the chairman of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Authority, spoke for the protesters and said that the state judiciary and Governor Ademola Adeleke were ignoring legal orders.
The PDP ALGON leadership, on the other hand, called the protest wrong and questioned the reason for it.
The statement, which was signed by both its chairman, Sarafa Awotunde, and its secretary, Lukman Afolabi, called the protest “embarrassing and disgraceful.”
It said that the APC chairmen had stayed in charge of council administrations after their terms ended.
The statement says, “They have been in council offices for about 14 months after their term supposedly ended in October 2025 and have kept collecting money meant for local governments.”
The PDP group also asked why the APC chairmen chose to protest outside the court instead of letting the legal process run its course.
“Do they want to rush the courts?” The statement said, “If they are sure of their claims, they should let the court decide.”
The disagreement shows that there is still a fight between officials elected in the October 2022 local government elections and those elected in February 2025 over who should be in charge of council areas in Osun State.
