Many Nigerians have responded to the statement by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Tinubu that small businesses like akara, roasted corn, kuli-kuli require little capital to start.
In a video making rounds online, Remi was said to have explained to journalists the administration’s support for small businesses through grants and not loans.
“It doesn’t take a lot of money to start akara business,” she said. It doesn’t take much to get to roast corn or kuli-kuli. We didn’t lend them money, we gave them a grant. “We have been encouraging Nigerians in all ways possible. “I turned to several others as well.”
However, Remi’s comment angered many netizens who argued the remarks were insulting and did not reflect or address the economic challenges facing many Nigerians. @whokantakulaya wrote: “We don’t want you to just help create a society where the bare minimum can be affordable Ma , where Norms are Norms , just the bare minimum and we good.” @Susan wrote: “This is an insult to Nigerians and these people needs to be put in their places! “Make the country ungovernable for them.” @DedeHydra wrote, “This is your fault, Nigerians of different tribes and religions. You see what a First Lady is telling your mothers, wives, and daughters. “If you don’t vote them out, she and Tinubu will increase your suffering by 7 times.”YanaOffycial said: “Now it’s clear. The husband don corrupt the wife finish.” Again nothing is left. I swear to God, it will be a disaster if these people come back for a second term.” @PoliticalPhoenix wrote: “Remi Tinubu handing out small grants for akara and roasted corn as her husband’s policies have devastated millions of businesses and plunged Nigerians into abject poverty? This is not hope, these are crumbs from the table they broke. Fuel prices, inflation and hardship are still unbearable. “Nigerians don’t need PR grants, they need real economic recovery.” @whokantakulaya wrote: “But what always amuses me is the people behind them shaking their heads. So now Ma how many people for Yankee their government Dey empower to start Akara and roasted corn business . When fuel increase them say na e be for yankee . “But it’s from hell, be reasonable Ma.”Solomon_Sire wrote “Nigerians are just greedy people, someone gave out all these billions as grant and you people still couldn’t make the best use of it. “Nigerians can’t be helped, this current Government has helped take out more people out of poverty and they deserve our votes for second term.” @Un2say1 said: “Even after the so called useless advice of Akara and boli investment, KAI and CBD officials will still come after them when they start the petty business.”
