‘Some Lawmakers Never Raise Their Hands In National Assembly But Win Elections’ – Saraki

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has urged Nigerians to demand better representation from all elected officials and not just the President.

Mentioning legislators specifically, Saraki asked citizens to watch and seek feedback from their elected representatives.

He said if citizens request for legislative records, the National Assembly will be better, because the lawmakers will be on their toes.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, the ex-governor of Kwara State lamented that some lawmakers do not contribute anything to debates at plenary in the National Assembly, yet they win elections every four years.

“The biggest reform that would improve the National Assembly will cost the Government nothing.

“Citizens are the ones who watch, ask questions and vote on legislative records — not just presidential personalities.

“You see legislators who keep winning elections, and for four years they have not even raised their hand to speak. But it’s a win anyway. “Those people are active, because they cannot do what you want when they come back to their constituencies, they do not win,” he said.

Saraki was also reported to have called for electoral reforms to ensure that the right people are elected, which in turn helps to build a strong institution.

“The foundation is weak until we have a process that ensures the right people are elected.

“If there is one single thing that we take away from here, it is that we have to go back and make sure that we have a process where the right people are elected,” he added.
