Tems says she was nervous during performance at Obama Presidential Centre

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has spoken on her experience performing at the official dedication of the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago.

Wednesday’s event at the John Lewis Plaza was one of three days of events to reveal the $850 million facility to the public before opening.

The singer expressed on her social media page that she was very nervous during the event, especially after she called former U.S. President Barack Obama’s daughter by the wrong name while talking to the crowd.

Before her musical performance, Tems had addressed the guests saying:

“I am so blessed and honoured to be here… this one is for you, everybody, here, to Mr and Mrs Obama, to Sandra, and all the family.”

After the event, she posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account:

I was nervous, Lord knows! I’m so sorry!!!”

Alongside a host of global music stars, including Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Bruce Springsteen and Christina Aguilera, performed Tems.

The Obama Presidential Centre also features a portrait by Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, further contributing to the Nigerian representation at the newly dedicated facility.
