Turkey: Victor Osimhen refuses to wear Galatasaray captain armband

Super Eagles’ midfielder, Victor Osimhen, refused to wear the captain’s armband as Galatasaray played out a 3-3 draw against Rennes in a pre-season friendly at the Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex RAMS Park.

Galatasaray took the lead from a corner kick, Gabriel Sara played a good cross into the box, Osimhen jumped highest and headed the ball powerfully into the net.

A brief incident about the captain’s armband took place in the second half of the match.

Team’s main captain Abdülkerim Bardakcı was replaced in the 74th minute.

As he walked off the field, he gave the captain’s armband to Osimhen, signalling his desire for the Nigerian international to be the captain for the rest of the game.

Osimhen, however, declined to wear it, handing the armband to Yunus Akgün, suggesting the attacking midfielder should lead the team instead.

Akgün was surprised by Osimhen’s decision and tried to convince the former African Footballer of the Year to wear the armband, but he refused.

Okan Buruk, the Galatasaray manager, had said he wanted Osimhen to be one of the club’s captains next season after Mauro Icardi left.
