The United States Mission has called on Nigerians to respect the US immigration laws on their stay in the country.
The directive was reported and issued by the Commission in a statement shared on its đť•Ź handle.
It urged applicants to remain for the period of time authorised only, to keep their documents up to date and to refrain from any actions that could affect their eligibility to re-enter the United States in the future.
The mission said it is important to adhere to visa conditions to protect future study and travel opportunities.
It was stressed that adhering to the rules was not only the proper thing to do but also a protection of the individual’s chances of traveling.
“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws is not only the right thing to do, it also safeguards your future and keeps opportunities open for travelers from Nigeria,” the post read.
The reminder came amid ongoing US efforts to curb visa overstays and preserve the integrity of its immigration system.
The embassy has called on Nigerians travelling to study, work or visit to always respect the conditions attached to their visas.
“Whether you’re here in the U.S. to study, work or visit, always follow the terms of your visa. Obey the rules. Stay as long as you are authorized to stay. Keep your papers up-to-date. “Make choices that protect your dreams,” the mission stated.
“When you respect the process, then everyone wins,” it said, adding that respecting the immigration process benefits both travellers and the US-Nigeria relationship.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria said the measures are aimed at protecting the integrity of the visa system and preserving access for legitimate travellers.
