Funke Akindele Opens Up on How She Copes With Heartbreak

Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele has opened up about her emotional struggles, revealing how she navigates her lowest moments while balancing her career demands.

In an interview with CNN Africa, the filmmaker, who has earned widespread acclaim for her acting and box-office successes, disclosed that she sometimes retreats into solitude to cry and process her emotions before finding the strength to move forward.

“I lock myself in the room and cry. I cry, break down, hit the bed. But after that, I pick myself up and come back to life. I see myself as the Minister of Happiness for the people,” she said.
The actress noted that her personal struggles, including relationship challenges and marital experiences, often become public knowledge, leaving her vulnerable to criticism and judgment.

“There were moments when I reflected on my decisions and worries about how people will react, but I have learnt not to allow public opinion to dictate my life. Sometimes, I tell myself, ‘You have made a mistake again, and people are going to judge you.’ But on second thought, I will tell myself that I don’t really care what people say.”

Rather than remain overwhelmed by challenges, Akindele explained that she encourages herself to face reality, overcome setbacks and move forward. She added that prioritising her mental health has been central to her ability to navigate difficulties.

“I always consider my mental health first. I have done that over the years, and it has helped me,” she said.

Beyond opening up about her emotional struggles, the Behind The Scenes star actress also spoke about making a conscious effort to reconnect with her social life and pay greater attention to her personal well-being.

“I am trying to catch my groove back on social media. Now, I am more intentional about myself; I make my hair and look good. Before, I was all about work. I am still all about work, but differently. Before, I could just come out with my cornrows and face cap with slippers or sneakers. At work, I sit at my table and stay focused. Now, you can see me dress so well for the office,” she said.

For Akindele, the change reflects a growing understanding that professional success shouldn’t come at the expense of personal care, self-love, and meaningful relationships.

“Over the years, I have noticed that it’s not all about the work; you also have to take good care of yourself, love yourself. It’s very important. You need to have time for your family and loved ones, because when the work is done, the family will be there,” she added.
