Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, says that plans are in place to stop the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from holding its convention in Abuja. He calls this an abuse of public office.

The claim was made in a statement posted on his official page on April 14, 2026.

The statement says that the alleged move is an attempt to take away Rainbow Event Centre’s license, which is where the ADC convention is supposed to take place.

Atiku said that the opposition party had met all the requirements for the event and that there was no legal reason to keep it from using the facility.

“The ADC has paid all of its fees. Every contract has been signed by the ADC. He said, “The ADC has not broken any laws.”

He said that the situation was an attempt to stop opposition activities and warned that such actions could hurt the foundations of democracy.

“This is how democracies are killed by a thousand small, spiteful acts against opposition parties,” the statement said.

The former presidential candidate also said that the convention would go on as planned, even though there were reports of pressure.

“The convention will go on. The ADC will go up. He went on to say, “And Nigeria will rise with it.”
