Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor and senator from Kano State, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of a change in his political strategy.

In a letter of resignation dated April 19, 2026, and sent to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in the Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau said that his departure would take effect right away.

He wrote, “Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective today.”

The ex-minister said that the decision came after a lot of discussion within his political group, which suggests that he will soon switch parties.

Shekarau said, “This decision comes after a lot of discussion within my political group about moving our political career to a different party.”

He thanked the party leaders at the ward level and said, “I thank you for being a good leader, and I pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship.”

The letter was also sent to the PDP Chairman of Kano State and the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area. This shows that all party levels were officially notified.
