A 21-year-old man named Umar Idris has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Kano State High Court for killing a shop owner named Sabiu Umar.
Idris, who lived in the Farawa Quarters of Kumbotso Local Government Area, was found guilty of culpable homicide after the prosecution proved that he stabbed the 28-year-old victim to death.
Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the prosecution’s lawyer, told the court that the event took place on September 2, 2021, in Tsamiya Mariri Quarters in Kano. He said that Idris broke into the victim’s shop around 10:30 p.m., where Sabiu worked and lived, and stole wedding clothes meant for his bride.
The prosecution says that the victim raised an alarm after finding the intruder, which led to a confrontation. Idris is said to have attacked him with a knife during the fight, causing injuries to his neck, shoulder, and other parts of his body that eventually killed him.
The prosecution called three witnesses and used the defendant’s confession as evidence. Idris, on the other hand, said he did not commit the crime.
Muftau Bello’s lawyer called two witnesses to defend him and asked the court to be lenient.
Justice Sunusi Ado-Ma’aji said in his decision that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Because of this, the judge gave Idris the death penalty by hanging.
“I sentence Idris to death by hanging for stabbing the victim in the neck, shoulder, and other parts of his body, which caused his death. The judge said, “May the Lord have mercy on his soul.”
