Residents of the Agbado area of Lagos State on Wednesday protested at the office of Ikeja Electric over prolonged power outage in the community.

The protesters, who were mostly women, reportedly blocked the entrance to the electricity distribution company’s office, demanding the immediate restoration of power supply to the area.

The blackout has lasted for several weeks, residents say, hampering economic activities, affecting households and adding to the financial burden on residents who now depend heavily on alternative sources of power.

Some community members accused the company of not giving enough information about the cause of the outage or when power would be restored.

The demonstrators also claimed that several complaints made to the company had received little response, leading them to organise the protest.

The residents, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, called on relevant authorities to intervene and ensure a lasting solution to the electricity crisis in the community.

Officials of Ikeja Electric appealed to residents to remain calm while reacting to the protest, explaining the outage was due to technical issues.

The company reassured the community that efforts are ongoing to rectify the fault and restore stable electricity supply to the affected areas.

The protest is a sign of increasing frustration among residents in parts of Lagos over persistent problems with electricity supply and the economic effect of long blackouts on homes and businesses.
