The 2027 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has slammed President Bola Tinubu for extending the tenure of the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, by a final six months.
This latest development, it was learnt, was confirmed in a statement Friday, June 19, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Adeniyi’s first term as Comptroller General of Customs ought to have ended on August 1, 2026.
Onanuga said the six-month extension, which will lapse in February 2027, was to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service.
The presidential spokesperson said during the transition period, Adeniyi will, in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board, facilitate the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached the age of 60 or have served for 35 years.
Sowore, in a post via his social media page, said Adeniyi should have retired two years back, stressing that the move, which he described as a wrong-headed policy, is a morale killer in public institutions.
Sowore said the extension of Adeniyi’s tenure undermines professionalism, blocks career progression and sends a message that rules are for some people while others enjoy political favouritism.
“I totally reject the six-month extension given to the Comptroller-General of Customs after he should have retired close to two years ago. Such a misguided policy is a morale killer in public institutions. It erodes professionalism, impedes career advancement and sends the message that rules apply to some but not others, and that political favoritism trumps all. “In any institution, personal or political convenience cannot take precedence over due process.”
